“Over-Flow” is a short documentary film directed by American-Trinidadian filmmaker and In The Know Video Producer, Elizabeth Ramjit. In October 2018, Ramjit traveled to Trinidad and Tobago right when the torrential downpours and floods that would destroy nearly 80 percent of the country had only just begun.

The Caribbean marks the birthplace of tons of cultural fixtures that are widely enjoyed around the world, and one of its most celebrated exports is Soca music.

The genre was founded in Trinidad and Tobago by Caribbean music legend Lord Shorty in the early 1970s and has since blossomed into the year-round soundtrack for several Caribbean islands. 

In celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month in June, In The Know chatted with the princess of Soca — Lord Shorty’s granddaughter! — Nailah Blackman.

Carolina Contreras suffered hours upon hours of poking, prodding and burning before she unexpectedly realized she’d had enough.

“At 23, after 15 years of relaxing my hair and being a slave every two months to a very painful chemical relaxer, I took the decision of embracing who I was,” Contreras, now the CEO of Miss Rizos Salon, told In The Know. “And so one day I literally decided to just cut it all off.”
